Scholarships and Grants for Hispanic and Latino Students

Hispanic and Latino Americans have made great strides into all walks of education in the last two decades.  As a percentage of students on college campuses, they are still vastly underrepresented though.  The foundations and businesses listed below are just some of those dedicated to providing a way for deserving students and their families to pay for college.

FAFSA DEADLINE

The FAFSA (Federal Assistance for Federal Student Aid) is the form used to apply for federal financial aid. The information you provide on it determines your Expected Family Contribution. The Hispanic League DOES NOT require a FAFSA application but many other scholarships may.

Online applications must be submitted by midnight Central Time, June 30, 2018.
Any corrections or updates must be submitted by midnight Central Time, September 15, 2018.

State Deadline
North Carolina - As soon as possible after October 1, 2016. Awards made until funds are depleted.

College Deadline
Check with the college(s) you are interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about its definition of an application deadline - whether it is the date the college receives your FAFSA, or the date your FAFSA is processed.

We recognize that it is challenging for students and parents to find tools to sort through all the available scholarships applicable to their family. The Hispanic League has received access to the scholarship guide listed below. It was created by Reviews.com.  We do not endorse this website but the information listed looks like it can be very helpful.  It is based on over 200 hours researching 17 of the most popular scholarship search platforms that are currently available. They analyzed and audited them using five core metrics to identify key functionality, research tools, and useful student resources.

The entire guide along with some of its features are listed here:

This list is NOT current as some scholarship sponsors have not released application deadlines for 2017-2018 but you can check their websites for more information

Addictive substances abuse has killed more people than every American war combined, and more than 10 times over. Many victims of drug addictions feel as though they are fighting a war themselves.

Through the years, millions of lives have been damaged due to drug abuse and addiction. In the US, there are an estimated 3.6 million people who are addicted to some form of drug, whether for recreation or by prescription. These include people who accidentally become dependent, and eventually addicted to painkillers like Opioids.

With the AddictionResource Scholarship, we want to challenge current and prospective college students to share their story on how we can make the world addiction-free.

Scholarship Details and Awards

Every year, we select three winners in the essay contest. The winners will receive awards toward their tuition at their respective colleges and universities. The winning applicants for first, second and third place receive scholarships in the amounts of $2,000,$700 and $300, respectively. The scholarship awards may only be used to pay for college tuition and/or education-related expenses. There are no costs associated with submitting an application for this scholarship.

Are you passionate about creating a tobacco-free world? Tobacco-Free Life awards $2,000 in scholarships each quarter to students who are committed to preventing the suffering and death caused by smoking. If you share our vision, we want to support you in your academic study.

Scholarship Information

Tobacco-Free Life is offering scholarship awards to the students who best demonstrate their skills in encouraging smokers to break free of their addiction by creating a well-researched and evidence-based paper offering advice to tobacco users.

The Problem

Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the world. According to the World Health Organization, half of tobacco users die as a result of smoking-related diseases. In addition to the abundant risks to the user, smoking also harms bystanders and the environment.

Almost 70 percent of smokers want to quit, and around 43 percent try each year. However, many smokers don’t have the know-how or the willpower to kick the habit for good. Over two-thirds of smokers who quit for a short period of time will relapse and take up smoking again.

The Solution

Inspiring smokers to make a positive change in their lives with evidence-based information has been shown to increase their chances of successfully quitting.

What to Do

If you want to apply for the scholarship, simply submit a typed essay of between 1,000 and 1,500 words that answers the following questions:

  • Why do you believe smoking is a significant problem for both individuals and society as a whole?
  • We as a society need to tackle the issue of smoking. What is the best way to accomplish this, and why is it the best approach?
  • Imagine we’re successful in creating a smoke-free world: what would that world look like? How would it be different to the world we live in today?
  • If you could say just one thing to current smokers, what would it be?

When you’ve completed your essay, sign it with your full name, your email address, phone number and permanent address.

PRIVATE SCHOLARSHIPS

Another potential source of financial aid is private scholarships. There are a few private scholarships for undocumented students that do not require the student to be a US citizen or resident or have a social security number in order to apply. Information about such scholarships can be found in the FastWeb scholarship search. Other good resources include the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF)(see especially the MALDEF List of Scholarships for Undocumented Students and the MALDEF Scholarships) and the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund.

Another good resource for California students is Latino College Dollars: Scholarships for Latino Students. This directory directory includes several scholarships that do not require US citizenship and are available to undocumented students.

Federal Student Aid

If the student is a US Citizen but one or more parents are undocumented, the student is eligible for federal student aid. However, if the parents supply a fake or stolen social security number (SSN) on the form, the student's FAFSA will be rejected when the parent's social security number fails to match. The FAFSA may also be rejected when the parents submit a SSN or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) that is valid for work purposes only. If the parents do not have a social security number or the social security number fails the match, they should use 000-00-0000 as their social security number on the FAFSA form.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACHIEVERS BLOG

NATASHA

NATASHA MORALES-CASTELLANOS

A SMART AND DISCIPLINED STUDENT, Natasha Morales- Castellanos earned top grades in high school. With a 4.0 GPA and a 5.034 weighted GPA, she was second in her class of 335 at Glenn High School.

But Natasha’s school records don’t fully reflect her laser-like focus on education. Nor do they show her fierce determination, generous spirit, or deep appreciation for all the people who have helped her along the way.

Natasha, now a junior at Salem College with 3.867 GPA, is a first-generation college student. She also migrated with her mother to the United States from Mexico at age five. Soon after, she fell in love with learning.

"I loved school, even when I was really little," she said. "And I knew education was definitely important, something I had to do. Education was the way to help my family in the future."

Through middle school and high school, Natasha kept her eye on college. Challenging chemistry classes narrowed her goal further: to be a chemical engineer.

Busy working part-time jobs, volunteering with the El Nido family literacy program, and babysitting her younger brother and sister, Natasha stayed focused. Mentors gave encouragement and direction ("I still talk to my first grade teacher!" she says). Supportive teachers and guidance counselors helped her navigate the complex process of applying to college. But the bigger question was how to pay for it. Financial aid and scholarships are often only offered to those who have citizenship — possibly leaving Natasha’s dream out of reach.

"It was really a struggle through the whole year, to keep my goal in mind and be sure I could make it happen," says Natasha.

Natasha ultimately received several scholarships from the Foundation and from other organizations, including the Hispanic League. "When I realized I could do it, that I could go to college, it was amazing," she remembers. "I told my mom, and she cried. She saw that I had a passion, but knew she couldn’t help me. She didn’t know how it would happen."

For herself and for others in her shoes, Natasha is quick to say thank you to the people who create and fund scholarships. "I am very grateful for the money," she says. "It’s important to realize a scholarship has a real impact on people. It is what makes opportunities. Without it, we wouldn’t be able to go after a dream, to achieve something, and give back."

Natasha, working toward a double major in chemistry and math with a minor in Spanish, now has her sights set on the next goal: going to graduate school.

NATASHA MORALES-CASTELLANOS received the F.A. and Charlotte Blount Scholarship, established in 2007 as a $2,500 renewable award for a graduating Forsyth County high school senior pursuing a four-year baccalaureate degree. In 2012, she received the John Russell Jarman Scholarship, a $500 one-time award supporting a graduating senior at Glenn High School. Natasha has also received grants from two other funds at the Foundation: the Otis B. and Genevieve Parrish Scholarship and the Kate B. Reynolds Scholarship.
